** 55 hours is an approximate average time required for ground instruction, flight instruction, simulator instruction, and checkride prep.
*** 35 hours of airplane rental time is an approximate average necessary for instrument training and includes the long cross country flight that is required for an instrument rating. This 35 hours does not account for the entire 50 hours of cross country required for an instrument rating. Please refer to how to plan your cross country time for more information.
• The cost summary is based on an approximation. Actual cost will vary slightly with each individual. The quoted price is for more hours then are set forth as the training minimums in the Federal Aviation Regulations, but are more accurate in terms of what it commonly takes to finish the instrument rating.
• Airplane rental pricing is based on a Cessna 172 that rents for $99 per hour.
• Instruction rates are $35 per hour.
One of the major determining factors in the cost of how your instrument rating is how you go about obtaining the 50 hours of required PIC cross-country time. If you are on a tight budget and are planning on continuing your flight training to obtain your commercial pilot license, I would recommend looking ahead at the commercial pilot cross-country requirements. This will help you to achieve your end goal in a more economical fashion.
