The FAA requires a minimum of 40 flight hours before you can obtain your license, however the national average is higher. Below is an approximation of cost with the price ranges listed as a very good estimation. Please note that since flight training is given at multiple locations throughout the Portland-Metro area, we are unable to give exact quotes online. Also, each individual has slightly different outcomes on completion times of training.

Instruction Rate = $45 per/hour. Aircraft rental not included.

Minimum investment for private pilot license:
40 Hours in Cessna 150............................ $3,600
30 Hours of Instruction............................ $1,350
Materials and Exam Fees........................... $ 600
Flight Test Aircraft Rental.......................... $ 135
Aircraft Renter Insurance.......................... $ 350
= TOTAL COST APPROX............... $6,035

The above quote is absolutely possible for people to obtain their license with those figures, however it is more common that people finish closer to the following approximation.

55 Hours in Cessna 150............................ $4,950
40 Hours of Instruction............................ $1,800
Materials and Exam Fees........................... $ 600
Flight Test Aircraft Rental.......................... $ 135
Aircraft Renter Insurance.......................... $ 350
= TOTAL COST APPROX............... $7,835

** Please note that these costs were computed with aircraft rental at $90 per hour. Please check for the most current rental rates as they may have changed. The rental cost is usually directly related to fuel prices.**

Cost varies for everyone but is influenced by these 2 major components.
1. How often you fly.
2. How hard you study.

If you are attempting to finish you license in the least amount of hours to save on cost, take note of these points.

Fly Often.

If your flying is sporadic and inconsistent, or less than two times per week, expect to spend more money. Flying less than twice per week causes your lessons to have more time spent reviewing what was done in the previous lesson than if you were flying regularly and able to just focus on adding new skills to what was learned in the previous lesson.

Study hard.

There is book knowledge and studying that is necessary if you are going to pass the tests to become a competent pilot. For each hour spent flying, expect to spend 2-3 hours studying the various books and reading material that goes along with joining the pilot club.
